What is rss? (RSS) Really Simple Syndication is a XLM format designed for sharing headlines or other web content. RSS has evolved into a means of sharing content between sites such as BBC, CNET, CNN, Disney, Forbes, The Motley Fool, Wired News, Red Herring, Salon, Slashdot, ZDNet, Linux Today and others. RSS solves problems Internet webmasters face such as increasing traffic or gathering and distributing news. RSS can also be used for additional content distribution services.
Providing content from one source for distributing in different channels is what a syndicate does, thus sharing content among sites is called syndication.
XML (Extensible Markup Language) is the basis for RSS, was originally known as Rich Site Summary and was first developed by Netscape to drive channels for Netscape Netcenter. Today many others have been adopting RSS as a means of circulating headlines and links to new items on their websites.
RSS is a vital new mechanism serving a variety of purposes while attracting traffic from many different locations on the www. RSS is a better way to share data than many approaches like parsing HTML, using proprietary API's, database dumps or co-branding.
In short, RSS is a XML grammar for sharing data meaning the RSS file contains placeholders for data identified by a starting and ending tag.
